Practical tips

💡
Book in Advance, Especially During High Season

Overnight train and VIP bus tickets to Chiang Mai sell out quickly. To secure your spot and get the best prices, book at least a few days in advance, or even weeks during peak season (November to February) or Thai holidays. Use reliable platforms like 12go.asia.

💡
Choose the Right Seat on the Bus

If you're traveling by overnight bus, opt for seats at the front for less motion and better comfort. Avoid seats near the restroom if you're sensitive to noise. Ask for a blanket, as the air conditioning can be strong.

💡
Hualamphong or Krung Thep Aphiwat Station?

Please note, since 2023, most long-distance trains to the north depart from the new Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal (Bang Sue Grand Station) and no longer from Hualamphong. Double-check your ticket to avoid any confusion and wasted time.

💡
Arrival in Chiang Mai and Transfer

Upon arrival in Chiang Mai, whether at the train station, bus terminal, or airport, you'll easily find taxis, tuk-tuks, or songthaews (red shared pickup trucks) to reach your accommodation in the city. Prices are negotiable for taxis/tuk-tuks, or fixed for ride-hailing apps.

💡
Beware of Overly Insistent Agencies

Be wary of overly insistent travel agencies or taxi drivers around terminals in Bangkok who try to sell you tickets at inflated prices or less comfortable journeys. Always compare prices online before buying on the spot.

🛣️ The journey experience

The journey from Bangkok to Chiang Mai is a true immersion into Thailand's diversity. Imagine landscapes unfolding before your eyes, from lush green rice paddies to the misty mountains of the North, with a relaxed atmosphere onboard. The duration might seem long, but it's a chance to slow down and appreciate the journey, often made enjoyable by friendly encounters. Get ready for an authentic experience that's an integral part of your Thai adventure.

For this route, several options are available. Flying is the quickest alternative (around 1h15 flight), though often more expensive, with airlines like AirAsia, Nok Air, or Thai Lion Air. The overnight train is a classic experience, offering comfortable sleeping berths for a restful night while traveling north (approximately 11-15 hours). VIP buses are an excellent value-for-money option, with spacious seats and sometimes meals included, for a journey of about 10 to 12 hours. Companies like Sombat Tour or Nakhonchai Air are known for their reliability.

Given the multitude of options, the key is to plan calmly. If speed is your priority, flying is ideal. For an immersive experience and a controlled budget, the VIP bus or overnight train are perfect.
